The musical film of the year, ‘Gully Boy’, directed by Zoya Akhtar is based on the life of a rapper who dreams big and makes it big in the world of rap music. Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Gully Boy’ is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the banner, Excel Entertainment. Released on 9th February 2019, with a duration of 153 minutes, this film is the recent talk of the town.
The story revolves around Muraz (Ranveer), a slum dweller who silently harbours the dream of his passion in the tiny hut of his slum. Everytime he tries to step forward, failure occupies him and his financial condition reminds him of his disability. Discouraged by family and encouraged by his love interest Safeena (Alia), Murad rediscovers himself and sets on the journey of rap battle.
The film begins in the slum and captures the slum life in a oddly beautiful way. Mention should be made of Jay Oza’s cinematography that provides an insight into the reality of slum life.
Murad reveals a different side of Ranveer Singh. Where on one side, the fire of his passion reflects in his eyes, on the other hand poverty haunts him. Murad though lives a hard life in the slum, he believes ‘Apna time ayega’. Here Ranveer’s brilliant expressions do the maximum sayings.
Alia somehow got overshadowed by Ranveer’s ‘picture perfect’ acting. That spark in Safeena’s character seemed missing at some points in the film. Sub casts Siddhant Chaturvedi and Vijay Sharma deserve special mention here. Reema Kagti’s screenplay tied the knot of this musical drama.
Kudos to it’s musical team. The amazing lyrics, bombastic beats and terrific music will never let the audience get bored of. The songs are the cherry on the cake for rap lovers.
Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Gully Boy’ is not just a musical drama for rap lovers, rather it’s the story of every individual who dreams big in life. Woven in reality and rooted in the slums of Mumbai, it’s the story of self-belief, some hardwork, chasing dreams and fulfilling them. If the story is the heart of ‘Gully Boy’ then acting is its soul. Here, music and passion win over and its essence will linger long in the hearts.
